If you have ever experienced life as a new mom or dad with a baby who has colic, you know the frustration, inflame, sadness and exhaustion associated with it. There are few things in life more trying than mothering or fathering a newborn baby with colic. From the perspective of a mom who has been there before (for 6-plus months), here are the top ten tools you can use with your baby to fight the battle of colic.

The Happiest Baby on the Block. I cannot give this book by pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp a high enough rating. I attribute this book to having saved my life when my son had colic. This step by step guide for handling colic is priceless.

Infant swing. While some experts and parents are quick to discount the infant swing calling it a “babysitter for neglectful parents,” the infant swing is in fact an invaluable tool for most parents of a colicky baby. Use of the swing to withhold your baby with colic calm for at least a few moments a day is worth the possibility of a few condescending comments from others.

Infant Sling. The infant sling allows you to gain your colicky baby close to you. This comforts many newborns with colic and also allows you to have your hands free so you might (might) be able to accomplish some non-baby related tasks.

Front Carrier. If you or your baby is not a fan of the sling, try a front carrier, especially designed for infants who have some head control. You won’t be able to use a front carrier for a newborn, but it works well for an older baby who still has colic. The constant movement of riding around with mom or dad often calms colicky babies.

Bouncy Seat. The vibration and movement of a bouncy seat is often a real lifesaver for the parents of a baby with colic. A bouncy seat also may soothe your colicky baby long enough for a lickety-split meal for you.

White Noise. White noise is often crucial for getting newborns with colic to sleep for longer stretches. Try turning on the radio to “fuzz” or running a itsy-bitsy fan. Remember that your baby was used to a lot of noise before being born so white noise is soothing to many babies with colic.

Swaddling Blankets. Swaddling (as you may read in The Happiest Baby on the Block) is a great way to make colicky newborns feel pleasurable and secure. While we as adults would disfavor to have our legs and arms bound as in swaddling, most babies with colic love that collect feeling. There are special swaddling blankets, or just square blankets that can be used to swaddle your colicky baby.

Car. Yep, unprejudiced your car. Many babies with colic enjoy going for a ride in the car. Be forewarned that a car ride may soothe your colicky infant to sleep, but it may be well worth it. Taking a quick drive may be good for mom and dad too!

Pacifier. While I personally had no luck giving my colicky son a pacifier, many infants with colic are really calmed with one. If you are breastfeeding and concern about your baby using a pacifier or are disquieted about weaning later, don’t be. It is worth a little pain later to soothe the colic now.

A babysitter. The final item you should really have if you have a baby with colic is a trusted sitter. Your mom, your mother-in-law, or your sister with kids of her own will do objective grand. If your baby has colic for several months you MUST get out of the house and have a relaxing time alone or with your spouse for some time. Even as the parent of a baby with colic you may have trouble leaving your baby. Being away for a bit will make dealing with the colic a little easier.

Hopefully in the future doctors will fully understand colic and there will be a set solution. For now, follow these tips for helping handle your baby with colic.

When my oldest daughter was born, I walked the floor night and day, rocking and swaddling, singing and even crying…anything to invent my new little miracle finish her endless crying. Well, everyone told me she fair had colic and that it would pass. And, alas, pass it did, however I wish that I would have known then what I know now.

There are many theories about the causes of colic. Many believe that it is breastfeeding that causes it. “Either you are eating something that is not suited to her little tummy or you must be feeding her too noteworthy..” they will snort you. Well, maybe. Others believe that bottlefed babies are allergic to the formula. “Switch his formula and he will be just fine…” they will tell you. Well, yes that could be it too. Some will say it is gas or an immature nervous system. Maybe. And the list goes on and on.

However, I believe that the answer to solving colic problems is simple. Babies simply “come out” too early and therefore miss out on their “fourth trimester” in the womb. This new world needs a lot of getting used to, and some transitional coping methods are in order. Below are some sure fire ways to soothe a colicky baby and restore them to their comfortable, womb-like environment. Well, they will deem so anyway.

1. Swaddle her. Babies up to four months old feel advantageous and secure when bundled and will calm down. This imitates her cozy womb environment and soothes her cries with a sense of familiarity.

2. Carry him in a sling or carrier close to your body and walk around. The motion will imitate the movements he felt while he was being carried in your womb.

3. Play “white noise” such as the dishwasher, washing machine or even the vacuum cleaner to imitate the sounds she heard while profitable and snug in your tummy.

4. If all else fails, go for a car ride. The motion will imitate the frequent movement he felt while in your womb and may level-headed him, and you, down.

Some of these things will work all of the time and all of these things will work some of the time, but just keep in mind that this will all pass. Appreciate these precious days with your little one because soon you will have to potty train them and you will deem back to the good old days…when all you had to worry about was a exiguous colic!
